Raindeer male is watching its territory
Svalbard, 2018

Clear

Description

The snow cover of the hills in the background may confuse you, but I took this photo in the last days of summer. At that time, it often rains in Svalbard, but the first snowfalls may occur. For reindeer, this means the approaching end of the available pasture sou they usually try to make the most of it. Adult males, however, are slowly beginning to evince tension as a sign of nearing autumn rut. They often go around their herd and nervously watch for unwelcome competition in the area. It was the case of this stag, who went up a terrain wave to observe surroundings from here for a while.
